SCOTLAND YARD NEWS: Beep Test

September 13, 2007
Written by: Jason Stanley, Assistant Coach

Because we ended up playing on Sunday, the boys were off from training on Monday.  With 4 days until our next match and plenty of work to do, we put the guys through the Yo-Yo Endurance Test (“Beep Test”) first thing on Tuesday.  For those unfamiliar with the Beep Test, the test consists of two sets of cones, 20m apart, from which you must run back and forth adhering to a schedule of beeps played from a CD.  The time between beeps gets shorter in length as the test goes on so as the players tire, the time they have to reach the next set of cones becomes shorter.  Freshman Matt Bauhof recorded the top score, achieving a level of 14.11.

Immediately following the beep test, we held our first of several intra-squad “play-up” games that will determine which players will dress for this Friday and Sunday’s games.  This marked the return to action of Chris Pryzbylski, who suffered a high ankle sprain early in preseason, and Blake Loomis, who also suffered an ankle injury a few weeks ago.  Those still sidelined by injury include Sonny Koch (ankle), Ben Queen (knee), and Dave Henson (knee).

Wednesday’s training was very similar to Tuesday’s session, minus the Beep Test, which I’m sure the guys were happy about.  However, they did not escape fitness as we started things off with a core workout and an elastic band resistance workout.  After fitness, those vying for positions on the top squad played nearly a full 90-minute match while the starters and those seeing significant minutes played a series of small-sided games on an alternate field.

We’ll have a light session today in preparation for Friday’s game at Rochester College at 5 pm, and on Sunday, we open our home campaign at Scotland Yard against Holy Cross College at 3 pm.  The Reserve squad will also have a home match on Sunday at 10 am against Saginaw Valley State’s club team.
