Scots Men's Soccer comes up short in a 2-1 loss to Hope

The Alma Men's Soccer team hosted Hope College, ranked number six in the region, on Wednesday and played the Flying Dutchmen hard to the end, coming up on the short end of a 2-1 game. The contest, played on a comfortable fall afternoon at Scotland Yard, dropped Alma to 0-11 in the MIAA and 1-14-2 overall in 2009. Hope is now 8-1-2 in the league and 12-3-2 overall.

After a scoreless first half that saw Alma get the only shot on goal, the Scots tallied first, when Jr. M Andrew Waligorski (Midland, MI/Midland) scored on a header that was assisted by So. M Cameron Alman (Troy, MI/Troy Athens) at the 60:28 mark.

The Flying Dutchmen tied the game at 1-1 a little bit more than seven minutes later, when Jeffrey Stusick, assisted by Sam Joyce, got a shot past Alma GK Jon Nowak at 67:51. Hope notched the deciding goal at 74:28 as Andrew Nichols took a long kick pass from GK Logan Neil and found the back of the net on a shot for the 2-1 advantage.

For the game, Alma had three shots on goal, while the Flying Dutchmen finished the contest with four on the net. The Scots will next play on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Albion to take on the Britons in a 4:00 p.m. contest.

Nathan Kronewetter

Alma College men’s soccer is in the process of rebuilding a once dominating program, and has made strides under the direction of Nathan Kronewetter who was hired before the 2006 season.

Kronewetter earned his bachelor of arts from Hope College in 1996 in Studio Art and continued his studies at Ohio Wesleyan University in Education. A four-year player and three-year starter for the Flying Dutchmen, he served as a senior captain in 1996. Nathan led Hope to three MIAA Championships and two NCAA playoff berths including an NCAA quarterfinal appearance in 1994.
