Scots Men's Soccer loses to league foe Kalamazoo 3-0 on the road

The Alma Men's Soccer team hit the road on Wednesday to take on Kalamazoo College and dropped a 3-0 decision. With the loss, the Scots are now 0-9 in the MIAA and 1-12-2 overall, while the Hornets improved to 4-4-1 in league play and 4-7-2 for 2009.

The Hornets opened the scoring at 5:30, when MF Dane Carey found the net on a shot assisted by MF Dagan Hammar. MF Martin Blanc made it a 2-0 game just seven minutes later at 12:27, when he knocked in a corner kick assisted by Carey. The host team went into halftime with the 2-0 lead.

The lone goal of the second half came in the 71st minute, when Hammar booted a shot past Alma GK Jon Nowak, assisted by Carey, that gave the Hornets a 3-0 advantage at the 70:37 mark. GK Drew Lindamood played the last 14:31 for the Scots and Sr. MF Santi Lopez led the team with two shots on goal.

Alma next plays at Trine University on Saturday afternoon, with a match scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. "It's a huge honor," says faculty director Dave Zerbe. "You can't apply to perform there; they seek you out."

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 27th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
