Alma Men's Soccer loses to Calvin 5-1

The #8 ranked Calvin Men's Soccer team rolled into town on Saturday afternoon, stinging from a 1-0 double overtime loss to co-league leader Hope College and were expected to come out hard. They did, but not after an early goal by Alma put them back on their heels a bit.

In the end, the Knights defeated the Scots 5-1 to improve to 6-1-1 in the MIAA and 11-2-1 overall. The loss, at a chilly Scotland Yard, dropped the Scots to 0-8 in the league and 1-11-2 for the 2009 season.

Just 50 seconds into the match, Alma So. M Cameron Alman (Troy, MI/Troy Athens) booted a long shot past Calvin GK Michael Dolan, giving the Scots a 1-0 lead on a goal assisted by Jr. M Jeff Beck (Marquette, MI/Marquette). The joy was relatively short-lived unfortunately, as Calvin scored four goals in a span of less than ten minutes.

Cameron Alman, seen here in a game earlier this season, scored a goal 50 seconds into the match today against Calvin.

The Knights tied the contest at 1-1, when MF Alex McKenzie scored on a header off of a free kick by MF Dan Kmetz at 13:44. Just over two minutes later, Calvin broke through again and took a 2-1 advantage, when Kmetz converted a corner kick from S Scott Hooker at the 15:54 mark.

At 17:29, the score became 3-1, as McKenzie scored again when he tallied a goal from the left side of the box, assisted by S Brad Heethuis. That duo connected again less than seven minutes later, as McKenzie completed a first half hat trick on goal from the top of the box at 24:15. That completed the first half scoring and Calvin went to the break with a 4-1 advantage.

The Knights kept the pressure on in the second half, but Alma Jr. GK Jon Nowak (Traverse City, MI/West) was up to the challenge, as he made six saves in the final 45 minutes. The only goal of the final frame came at 87:50, when Calvin MB Chris Nance scored a goal right in front of the net that was assisted by McKenzie, giving the road team the final 5-1 margin of victory.

Alma continues the 2009 campaign on Wednesday afternoon, when they travel to Kalamazoo to take on the league rival Hornets. Game time is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
