MEN'S SOCCER LOSES LEAGUE OPENER 2-0 TO CALVIN

The Alma Men's Soccer team began MIAA play on Wednesday when they traveled to Grand Rapids to take on Calvin College. The Scots dropped a 2-0 decision to the Knights and now stand at 1-4-1 (0-1 MIAA) in 2009, while Calvin improved to 7-1 (1-0) on the year.

The game was scoreless until the 35th minute, when Calvin's Kurt Van Sickel scored his fifth goal of the season on a 35-foot shot assisted by Joe Broekhulzen. The Knights took that 1-0 lead into halftime, a half that saw the home team take 13 shots (three shots on goal) to Alma's three (one SOG).

The Scots played tough throughout the second half, but Calvin was able to get past Alma GK Jon Nowak at 86:32, when Broekhulzen took a low shot across the goal on an assist from Nick Holtrop. The tally gave the hosts the 2-0 advantage and the win.

For the game, Calvin notched 25 shots (10 SOG) to Alma's six (two SOG), with Ian Kurth and Santi Lopez getting credit for the shots at Calvin GK Jared Rushlau. Nowak played all 90 minutes for the Scots in net and recorded eight saves on the afternoon.

Alma returns to league action on Saturday, when they host Kalamazoo College at Scotland Yard. Start time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
