SCOTS MEN'S SOCCER DROPS SEASON OPENER BY A SCORE OF 1-0 TO WABASH

Alma’s Men’s Soccer team traveled to Crawfordsville, Indiana on Saturday, to take on Wabash College in their 2009 season opener and dropped a tough 1-0 match that saw the host team score the only goal of the game in the sixth minute of the contest. The Scots, 0-1, will play at DePauw University on Sunday afternoon.

"It was a typical first game, as we were rusty, but our squad played well at times," said Alma Head Coach Nathan Kronewetter. "We have a lot of room to develop, but I am happy with what I saw today. Tomorrow, we will continue to work on being sharper, but I am encouraged."

Wabash’s Dylan Anderson scored on a corner kick at the 5:08 mark in goal assisted by Ian Kelly that got by Alma Jr. GK Jon Nowak (Traverse City, MI/West).  The Scots mustered five shots towards the net in the first half to Wabash’s seven, with each team recording one shot on goal.

Alma pushed relentlessly in the second half, but could not come up with the goal that would tie the game. As in the first 45 minutes, each team had one shot on goal, as Wabash had 12 shots and Alma two in the final frame. Alma had 16 fouls to nine for the host team, while Wabash had seven corner kicks, while the Scots had two.

Ben Champion

Fr. F Ryan Lillibridge (Harry S. Truman) and Jr. M Ben Champion (Cedar Springs, MI/Cedar Springs) notched the two shots on goal for the Scots during the contest. Nowak played the entire contest for the Scots in front of the net, as Kronewetter used 17 players in the game

Alma College received a $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation in August 2009 for research that could eventually lead to the development of more effective drugs to treat and prevent certain kinds of influenza, including human infections of swine and avian flu. "This project provides an opportunity for students to get involved in important laboratory research," says faculty member Jeff Turk, principal investigator.
