ALMA MEN'S SOCCER TIES HOPE 1-1 IN SEASON-FINALE

The Alma Men's Soccer team concluded its 2008 season on Friday afternoon with a 1-1 tie against the MIAA second place Hope College at Scotland Yard. The game was played after the previously scheduled game on November 8 was postponed due to an outbreak of a Norovirus on Hope's campus.

The Scots struck first in the contest when F Matt Bauhoff, assisted by F Kevin Cross, put it past Hope GK Andrew Goorhouse 11:59 into the first half. Hope tied the game at 1-1 when M Sam Joyce put a shot past Scots GK Anthony Bergstrom for a goal that was assisted by M Shaun Groetsema at the 35:13 mark.

After a scoreless second half, the two teams battled through two overtimes to no avail and the game ended in the 1-1 tie. Each team had several good scoring chances in the overtime periods but could not finish the deal.

For the game, Hope outshot Alma by a margin of 22-13 and Scots M Mark Daisy, a Second Team All-MIAA selection, led the team with six shots. Bergstrom was outstanding in net for the Scots and finished with 11 saves on the day.

Alma finished the season with an overall record of 3-14-2, while Hope concluded its season at 14-2-4.
