Alma Loses Heartbreaker in Men's Soccer Season Opener

Scots Men Soccer Controls Action, Loses Game

The Alma Scots men's soccer team opened up the 2008 season on Saturday with a gritty and determined effort, but still found themselves on the wrong end of a 1-0 overtime loss to Siena Heights University.

Under third-year coach Nathan Kronewetter, the Scots took control of the action on Scotland Yard from minute one but just could not find the back of the net. For the game, Alma outshot SHU 19-10 and were led by F Mark Daisy and M Andrew Waligorski with five shots each.

Alma got strong goalkeeping play from both Anthony Bergstrom and Jon Nowak as the Scots controlled the tempo of the contest throughout its entirety. Several Maroon and Cream opportunities came up just short as the Scots played the majority of the game in the SHU end of the field.

At the 97:03 mark of the game and in overtime, SHU's Dan Oyer had a corner kick opportunity. His kick bounced off an Alma player and into the net, giving Seina Heights an improbable 1-0 victory on a beautiful, sunny 80 degree day at Scotland Yard.

Alma will build on this promising beginning and play host to Rochester College on Wednesday, September 4 at Scotland Yard.  The match begins at 4:00 p.m.

Alma students can explore the environmental wonders of the Galapagos Islands, practice Spanish language skills, study Ecuadorian culture, complete coursework in business finance, and fulfill a South American internship in entrepreneurship through Alma College's one-of-a-kind partnership with Equatorialis University in Quito, Ecuador.
