MEN'S SOCCER: Scots Battle Hard In Season Opener

Alma, Mi.- It is never easy to open your season on the road, especially if you are travelling to a Division II scholarship school, but the Scots took up the challenge and gave Saginaw Valley State University all they wanted in a hard fought 2-0 loss for Alma College.

The young Scots were anxious to take the field against an opponent not made up of Alma College student-athletes after two weeks of multi-a-day practices, and had a good showing against a physical SVSU team who began season play over a week earlier.

Shots on goal were few and far between in this one, and the Scots had their best chance at scoring bounce off the cross-bar early in the first period. Both SVSU goals, in the game, resulted from errors on the part of the Scots including a turnover on a free-kick by freshman goalkeeper Anthony Bergstrom and a penalty kick following an unfortunate hand-ball call in the PK box.

Head Coach Nathan Kronewetter was disappointed in the loss but happy with the way his team played and especially the promise his freshman showed in their first college game. "We played eight freshman today against a team that might be the most physical we face all year, and they held their own. All our guys played hard to day and I am proud of the effort they showed."

The Scots have a few days off before heading to Midland to face Northwood College Sept. 5 - their second Division II opponent in less than a week. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ’08, students toured cultural sites in Argentina, studied lizards in Jamaica, analyzed World War II topics at the British National Archives in London, performed music in Italy, and examined the natural wonders of New Zealand.
