MIAA SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: Tri-State Wins Game 1, Defeats Saint Mary's 6-3

Alma, Mich.- The 2008 MIAA Softball Tournament started with a bang as the Tri-State Thunder (29-6) and the Saint Mary's Belles (23-9) combined to hit three home runs in the 6-3 Tri-State win.

Elise English (Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) got the win on the mound for the Thunder, scattering six hits and three runs while striking out four to improve to 9-2 on the season.

McKenna Corrigan (Westlake, Oh./Magnificat) picked up the loss for Saint Mary's, giving up six runs on eight hits in her complete game performance. The loss marked her first of the year and takes her record to 12-1.

Offensively, Kara Graham (Climax/Climax-Scots) led the way for the Thunder going one for four with a homerun and two RBI's, while teammate Brittney Stensland (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly Shell Rock) went one for three with a homerun of her own and three RBI's.

Saint Mary's homerun came off the bat of Calli Davison (Muscatine, Ia./Muscatine) who went one for three with an RBI and a run scored in the game.

With the loss Saint Mary's will face off against the loser of the Alma/Hope game immediately following the conclusion of that game.

Tri-State will play the winner of the Alma/Hope game at 5:30 p.m. tonight.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ‘07 students explored important cultural sites in China, worked to restore a Jewish Holocaust cemetery in Poland, analyzed ethic politics in Scotland, and studied medieval literature in London.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
