MIAA SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

MIAA SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT: Tri-State Downs Alma with Last Out Heroics

May 1, 2008

Alma, Mich.- The Alma College Softball Team (25-10) was one out away from holding all the cards for the rest of the tournament but gave up a two run double in the bottom of the seventh to fall to Tri-State (30-6) by the score of 2-1.

The pitchers dominated this game as they both posted zeros across the score sheet all the way through the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, the Maroon and Cream broke through as freshman Kelly Koenigsknecht (Fowler) hit a soft fly to right field that scored Houston Verbeck (Flint/Kearsley) and put the Scots up 1-0.

Junior pitcher, Katie Koechling (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North), took the mound in the bottom of the seventh for the Scots and retired the first two batters she faced. However, the following two batters she faced both singled and Head Coach Denny Griffin brought in freshman Tara Leddy (Saginaw/Swan Valley) to save the game. After going to two strikes on both the batters she faced, Sallie Richardson (Jackson/Napoleon) found some green in the outfield as her walk off single scored two runs and gave the Thunder the 2-1 win.

Koechling picked up the loss for the Scots, giving up six hits in six and two thirds innings while striking out eight.

Lauren Hudson (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) picked up the win for TSU, scattering three hits and one run in her complete game performance to improve to 10-3 on the year.

Box Score

The Scots are now faced with the task of having to beat Hope and then beat Tri-State twice in order to win the MIAA Tournament. The first leg of their task will begin at noon tomorrow as they face the Hope College Flying Dutch in a rematch of today's 4-0 game that went to Alma.
