MEN'S GOLF: Alma Wins First Annual Tournament

The Alma College men’s golf team and the Albion men’s golf team played the first annual match at College Fields Golf course in East Lansing. Plans are to have this match annually, with the winning team taking home the silver cup trophy.

The format included 9 holes two man best ball, 9 holes two man alternate shot, and 9 holes of single match play.

Alma led the best ball 3 to 1, extended the lead in the second format to 6 to 2 and ended up winning the cup with a final standing of 13 - 3.

The Alex Palmer and Chris Lowry team had to come back each time and birdie the last hole in each match to win. Chris Lowry was 2 down with 3 to play and came back and won the last three holes to win his match. Steve Sanchez was in an underdog role and came on strong in his individual match to win 3 and 2 (up 3 holes with 2 to play). Rob Ronk came on strong in his final match to win 3 and 2 — and he only need 7 putts. Ryan Wilson and Bryan Mckenney played a strong alternate shot to win 5 and 4. Patrick Seymour also won all three matches and had one of the longest drives of the day — 360 yards — on hole number 4. And Evan Kay drove one a bit farther at 370 yards. Kyle Travis was one down in his final match but was able to fight back and win the 9th hole to win his match. Student-coach David Burkart set up the winning teams for each match.

Thanks go to the Albion Golf team and Coach Jordan Rich for a great day of sportmanship and friendly competition and to Drew Hoffman for his sportsmanship and support for both programs. The Alma College men’s golf team looks forward to a new athletic tradition between our two academic institutions.
