Alma Places Ninth at Olivet College Lou Collins Classic

Alma College took ninth place at the season-opening Olivet College Lou Collins Men's Golf Classic Sept. 1 and 2.

The Scots followed an opening round 314 with a 313 on Saturday to finish at 627, seventeen shots behind tournament leaders Bethel (Ind.) College and Davenport University. Bethel defeated Davenport in a playoff. Olivet College finished third, Calvin College fourth and Hope College fifth. A total of 16 teams competed.

Alma was led by Alex Palmer, who shot back-to-back 77s for a 154 to finish tied for 19th place in the individual standings. Also scoring for the Scots were Chris Lowry 74-82 156, Evan Kay 81-78 159, Kyle Travis 83-78 161 and Rob Ronk 82-84 162.

Calvin's Jeff TenBrink defeated Davenport's Nick Boone in a playoff to capture tournament individual honors. Both shot 70-72 142.

Dennis Griffin

Dennis Griffin

Denny Griffin is heading into his 26th year at Alma College and his 20th at the helm of the Scots softball program. He moved into the head softball coaching position in 1989 after two years as assistant coach. His teams have never fallen lower than third place in conference standings and 12 of his last 14 teams have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to his softball duties, Griffin is the program director for the Athletic Training Education Program. He teaches first aid/CPR and sports medicine classes in the Exercise and Health Science Department.
