Men's Golf

2004-05 Season Preview

Our golfers are excited and ready to play great golf in 2004 following a fourth-place finish in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) last fall. Our leaders Justin Desjarlais and Ryan Munro, Second Team All-MIAA, graduated in Spring 2004, but we have the ability to improve our 2003 finish.

Our goals are still the same, to achieve personal success and win the MIAA conference. Our leaders, the senior captains, will play a crucial role in our success. We are looking at our program differently this year using an “outside the box” approach and starting our season earlier. Practice and team qualifications are now before Preterm making the week of Preterm a combination of fun and competition.

We have eleven letter winners returning to our team this year. Our seniors are Ryan Riley, Chad Vietzke and Brandon McNally. Juniors Nathan Moulton, Greg Nelson, Corbin Swiastyn and Tyler Rummel are competing for the open spots followed by sophomores Jonathon Abent, Dave Burkart, Chris Lowry and Steve Sanchez.

Collin McLean intends to improve his game and reach new levels. Several first year students will challenge the veterans. Mike Yates from Canton brings talent and a great work ethic to our team. Dave Houbeck, from Flint and Ryan Wilson from Fenwick come from strong high school programs. Several first year students, transfers and new upperclassmen may be trying out.

The qualification matches are scheduled for Thursday, August 26, Friday, August 27 and Saturday, August 28. The top 12 golfers from the qualifying matches and a team manager make the team.

Our Season begins with the Olivet Classic, a two-day tournament and a great test of golf, helping our team prepare for the upcoming MIAA tournament schedule. In addition to our MIAA matches we are entered in a new one-day, 36-hole tournament this year at Ferris State University September 17. We also play several junior varsity tournaments and matches. The Spring Arbor tournament is another great test of golf and 36-hole event played in one day.

We are scheduling several spring 2005 matches, including Anderson University and John Carroll University.

We invite Students, Faculty, Alumni, parents and other special guests to our home tournament, Saturday, September 25 at the Pine River Country Club. We are ready to win our own event. Play begins at 1:30 p.m. with a shotgun start.
