Ed Kohtala

Ed Kohtala, the 23rd men's basketball coach at Alma College, joined the Scots for the 2001-02 season and has steadily improved the program since that time. He came to Alma after spending three seasons with the University of Texas men�¢ï¿½ï¿½s basketball program as an assistant. While at Texas, Kohtala helped lead the Longhorns to a 68-31 (.687) overall record, which included three NCAA Tournament appearances (1999, 2000, 2001). The Longhorns finished the 2000-01 campaign ranked 18th nationally, compiling a 25-9 overall record.

Prior to his stint at Texas, Kohtala spent one season as an assistant at Clemson (1997�¢ï¿½ï¿½98). He earned his first collegiate coaching job in 1996�¢ï¿½ï¿½97 as a graduate assistant at Florida under head coach Billy Donovan.

Kohtala began his coaching career in 1984�¢ï¿½ï¿½85 as head basketball coach and teacher at St. Edward�¢ï¿½ï¿½s School in Vero Beach, Fla. After completing four seasons at St. Edward�¢ï¿½ï¿½s, he was an assistant coach for five years at Vero Beach High School. He also served as head coach at Rabun-Gap Nacoochee High School in Rabun-Gap, Ga. for three years.

Kohtala, a native of Vienna, Maine, graduated from Mt. Blue High School in Farmington, Maine. He went on to earn his bachelor�¢ï¿½ï¿½s degree in secondary education from the University of Maine in 1981. Kohtala and his wife, Angie, reside in Breckenridge with daughters Camille and Katherine.

Rob Boden


Men's Basketball Assistant Coach

Rob Boden was hired in the spring of 2004 as an assistant coach for the Scots. Prior to joining the Maroon and Cream, Boden was an assistant at Saginaw Valley State University. He spent six seasons with the Cardinals and was involved in all aspects of the program. Prior to his time at SVSU, he served on the staffs of Central Michigan University (1997�¢ï¿½ï¿½98) and Northwood University (1994�¢ï¿½ï¿½97).

Boden�¢ï¿½ï¿½s return marks his second stint with the Scots. From 1986�¢ï¿½ï¿½94, Rob served as the Scots�¢ï¿½ï¿½ assistant under former head coaches Ralph Pim and Bob Eldridge. Before joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Boden had a very successful nine�¢ï¿½ï¿½year run as the head basketball coach at Ithaca High School.

Boden is a graduate of Northern Michigan University and West Iron County High School in Iron River, Mich. He and his wife, Shelley, are both teachers in the Ithaca Public Schools.

Lonnie Griffin
Men's Basketball Assistant Coach

Lonnie Griffin returned to Alma College in the fall of 2006 as an Admissions Representative and Assistant Coach with the men�¢ï¿½ï¿½s basketball program. Griffin was a member of the Alma College men�¢ï¿½ï¿½s basketball staff as head junior varsity coach and an assistant varsity coach from 2002 through 2004.

Griffin spent last season at Grand Valley State and helped the Lakers win the North GLIAC title and the GLIAC Tournament with a 27-4 record en route to an NCAA Tournament berth. His duties at GVSU included working with post players, student-athlete�¢ï¿½ï¿½s academics, team travel and scouting.

Prior to serving at Grand Valley, Griffin served as an assistant coach for Bob Taylor at Northwood University. His responsibilities at Northwood included all aspects of recruiting, scouting and video breakdown of opponents.

A 2001 graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Griffin was a student assistant coach with the Eagles.

Cheyenne Luzynski
Men's Basketball Junior Varsity Coach

Cheyenne Luzynski joined the Alma coaching staff in 2005 and returns to coach the junior varsity squad this season. She is also the Director of the Stone Recreation Center at Alma College. She graduated from Central Michigan University summa cum laude in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Potterville High School where she received the 1999 Female High School Heisman Award for the state of Michigan.

She played on the CMU club volleyball team for five years, serving as combined president/coach/captain in that time. She helped the club team become one of the nation's finest while honing her coaching skills at the camp level.

Since graduating, Luzynski has served as an assistant volleyball coach at Alma College and head coach of the junior varsity volleyball program. In addition, she coached track and field at Fulton Middleton High School for three years. She currently resides in Alma.

Nate Moulton
Student Assistant Coach

Nate Moulton joins the Scots as a student assistant for the 2006-07 season, finishing his undergraduate work at Alma College.

A letterwinner on the Scots men's golf team, Moulton is a native of Newberry, Mich.

Students conducting research side-by-side with faculty has been an Alma legacy for generations. Alma students team up with faculty on scholarly research or to collaborate on creative or performing arts projects. An annual Honors Day features student presentations, performances and exhibits. Many students present such work at regional, national and international meetings.

Jim Cole

Jim Cole
Graduation: 1974

Jim Cole '74 enters his 17th season at the helm of the Scots. In 2004, Cole led the Scots to the MIAA title and a berth in the NCAA Division III national playoffs, the second time in three years the Maroon and Cream advanced to the NCAA postseason.

A former All-MIAA and All-District quarterback for the Scots, Cole draws on the championship experiences of playing for the 1970, '71 and '72 MIAA co-champions and coaching the 1988 co-champ's defense.

Cole sports a career mark of 105-67-0, making him Alma's winningest football coach.
