Assistant Coach Julian Springer 

Julian Springer comes to Alma College as the Director of the Stone Recreation Center and Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach. Springer graduated from Central Michigan University with a Master’s of Arts Degree in Athletic Administration in 2007. While at Central Michigan, Springer was the Head Coach of the CMU Men’s Club Basketball Team for two seasons along with teaching undergraduate physical education courses for two years. Springer served as a student assistant coach with the Chippewas under Head Coach Ernie Zeigler. He was also an assistant varsity coach at Sacred Heart High School located in Mount Pleasant, MI.
Springer graduated from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Recreation in 2005. While at SIU, he served as a student assistant with the Salukis under Head Coach Chris Lowery for one season in order to receive his coaching minor.

A native of Chicago, IL, Springer Directed Chicago Summer Basketball Leagues for two years along with coaching a number of high school athletes who now play College Basketball at all levels. He has also spent years coaching youth basketball camps in Illinois.
 

 

Alma College alumnus Josh Brehm was the 2006 recipient of the Gagliardi Trophy, given annually to the best NCAA football player in Division III. The Gagliardi Trophy recognizes excellence in academics, athletics and community service.

Terry Smith

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
