ALMA SENIOR MEN'S HOOPS FORWARD MATT BROWN NAMED MIAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ROYAL OAK, MI – Three outstanding senior forwards – Matt Brown of Alma College, Jesse Reimink of Hope College, and Brandon McClary of Olivet – have been honored at this week’s Players of the Week in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Brown, a senior from Midland (Midland HS), scored 50 points as the Scots split a pair of games, losing in double overtime to Olivet, then upsetting Albion on the road, 71-65. He fired in 24 points in the loss to the Comets, then added 26 points, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, and pulled down 10 rebounds in the win over the Britons.

Reimink, a senior from Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS), scored 44 points, dished out nine assists and had eight steals in leading the Flying Dutchmen to wins last week over Adrian, 97-79, and Trine, 71-68. He had 19 points, eight assists and four steals against the Bulldogs and 25 points and four steals in the win over the Thunder. Reimink became the first Hope player to lead the MIAA in scoring in 13 years, averaging 21.1 points per game, and finished in the top five in five statistical categories

McClary, a senior from Bellaire (Bellaire HS), scored 38 points and pulled down 22 rebounds as he led the Comets to victories over Alma, 75-72, in double overtime and Adrian, 81-76. He scored 22 points and had eight boards against the Scots, then followed with a double-double against the Bulldogs, scoring 16 points and collecting 14 rebounds. McClary finished third in the MIAA in scoring at 17.3 points per game, second in rebounding at 8.4 boards a contest and second in field goal percentage at 51.8 percent. He finished in the top five in six statistical categories.

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
