ALMA COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL ENDS REGULAR SEASON PLAY WITH AN IMPRESSIVE WIN AT ALBION 71-65

The Alma College Men’s Basketball team went on the road Saturday to conclude the 2008-09 regular season and came away with an impressive 71-65 victory over Albion College. The Scots will now begin MIAA tournament play on Wednesday evening, when they travel to Holland, MI, to take on perennial league power Hope College, a team that Alma took to the last second just one week ago.

Alma trailed Albion by a score of 25-23 after the first 20 minutes of the game, but came back to outscore the Britons by a margin of 48-40 in the final frame. For the game, Alma shot a very impressive 50% on 19 of 38 shooting, while Albion ended the contest with a 37% average (21 of 57). Rebounding wise, the Britons held a slight advantage of 33-32.

Sr. F Matt Brown (Midland, MI/Midland) had his first double-double of the season by notching 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Fr. F Tommy Erickson (Escanaba, MI/Escanaba) added 11 points. So. G Jordan Redditt (Brighton, MI/Jesuit) had nine points and a team-high four assists, while Fr. F Cory Schneider (Carson City, MI/Carson City) notched nine points. So. G Kevin Ginther (Harbor Beach, MI/Harbor Beach) had eight points on the evening, all on free throws.

Alma’s game at Hope College is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday evening in Holland.

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
