ALMA MEN'S HOOPS LOSES TO CALVIN 66-55

The Alma Men's Hoops squad hosted MIAA rival Calvin College at Cappaert Gymnasium on Wednesday evening but saw the Knights get out of town with a 66-55 road victory. The loss dropped the Scots to 3-6 in league action and 5-14 overall, while Calvin improved to 8-1 in the MIAA and 13-6 total in 2008-09.

Alma played a strong first half, shooting 48% from the field, and went into the lockerroom deadlocked with Calvin at 27-27. The Knights were good on 44% of their offensive shots in the first half, including four of nine from beyond the three-point arc. The Scots connected on two of five three-point attempts and connected on their only free throw attempt.

Alma cooled off dramatically from the field in the final stanza as they shot just 26%, making nine of 35 attempts, including four of 16 from three-point land. Calvin, on the other hand, ratcheted up their offensive game by shooting 53% in the second half, including three of six three-pointers. The Knights hit 16 of 18 free throws in the final 20 minutes, while Alma connected on six of eight from the charity stripe. For the game, Calvin outscored the Scots by a margin of 19-7.

Fr. G Cory Schneider (Carson City, MI/Carson City) led Alma with 16 points and converted three of four three-point attempts, while So. G Jordan Redditt (Detroit, MI/Jesuit) and Sr. F Ryan DeHaan (Rockford, MI/Rockford) each had 11 points. DeHaan also led the way with 11 rebounds, including five offensive boards, three steals and three assists, while Redditt paced the Scots with four assists.

As a team, the Scots had a season-low in turnovers with five and of their 28 rebounds on the night, 13 were on the offensive glass. Alma now hits the road on Saturday when they travel to Trine University to take on the Thunder in an MIAA tilt, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Terry Smith

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
