ALMA MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO KALAMAZOO 80-52

The Alma Men’s Basketball team hosted Kalamzoo College on Saturday afternoon and were defeated 80-52 by the Hornets at Cappaert Gymnasium. The loss dropped the Scots to 3-5 in the MIAA and 5-13 overall, while Kalamazoo improved 6-12 on the year and 2-6 in league play.

The Hornets led the entire way on Saturday and after Alma’s Jr. C Isaac Thaler converted a three-point play to make the score 4-3 one minute into the contest, Kalamazoo scored the next six points to take a 9-3 lead. Twice Alma got back within three points but could not get any closer and the Hornets pulled away midway through the first half, when they led by 18 at 30-12. Kalamazoo’s biggest lead in the first frame was 24 and they went into the lockerroom with a 46-24 advantage at halftime.

Kalamazoo shot a sizzling 63% in the first half on 20 of 32 shooting, while the Scots hit on just 33% of their shots, going nine of 27 in the first 20 minutes. The Hornets hit four of nine from outside the arc but Alma was good on just one of nine of their attempts. Kzoo outrebounded the Scots by a margin of 18-11 in the first half.

The Scots made the score 46-28 at the 18:32 mark of the second half, but Kalamazoo played a very solid and determined 20 minutes and never let Alma get back into the game. Despite cooling off shooting in the second half, the Hornets extended their lead and at one point led by 34 points at 77-43 with 3:45 left in the game.

For the game, Kalamazoo shot 51% (41% in second half), making good on 35 of 69 attempts, while the Scots finished at 35% from the field as they made 19 of 55 shots. The Hornets had a 45-29 advantage on the boards, including 13 offensive rebounds and they committed just nine turnovers on the afternoon.

Fr. G Cory Schneider (Carson City, MI/Carson City) had a good afternoon, leading the Scots in scoring with 15 points, as he made good on six of ten shots and had three from beyond the arc. Sr. F Ryan DeHaan (Rockford, MI/Rockford) added ten points and a team-leading seven rebounds for Alma, while Sr. F Matt Brown (Midland, MI/Midland) had five boards and Fr. F Tommy Erickson (Escanaba, MI/Escanaba) contributed four rebounds. The Hornets had 12 players score in the game and were led by G Ben Jerome’s 13 points.

The Scots are off until Wednesday evening when the will host MIAA rival Calvin College in an 8:00 p.m. tipoff at Cappaert Gymnasium in Alma.

More than a third of all Alma students take part in at least one performance each year. The College offers majors in theatre, dance and music, but students of all majors may join in productions. The Remick Heritage Center for the Performing Arts is the region's premiere performing arts facility.

Terry Smith

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
