ALMA'S MEN'S HOOPS LOSES TO HOPE COLLEGE

The Scots’ Men’s Basketball Team, fresh off its first two-game winning streak since 2005, embarked on a weekend road trip, which saw them at Hope College on Wednesday evening. The Flying Dutchmen proved to be inhospitable hosts, as they defeated Alma by a score of 81-64, in front of  more than 2,000 people. With the loss, the Scots are now 2-3 in the MIAA and 4-11 overall, while Hope is 4-1 in league action and 11-5 on the 2008-09 campaign.

What had marked the two Alma wins entering tonight had been the fact that the squad had played with a lead and was able to dictate the pace of the game to their liking. However, after taking a 5-2 lead on a three-point jumper by So. G Jordan Redditt (Brighton, MI/Jesuit) 90 seconds into the contest, Hope scored the next six points and never trailed again in the game.

The biggest lead of the first frame came at the 3:29 mark, when the Flying Dutchmen hit a lay-up for a 38-18 lead. Alma was able to whittle five points off that margin and went into the lockerroom trailing by a 40-25 deficit at the half.

Hope played a solid and consistent second half and never really let the Scots believe that they were back in  the game. The Scots cut the deficit to 12 points on a couple of occasions, the last being with 8:06 left in the contest, but the Flying Dutchmen displayed the killer instinct which makes them one of the true favorites to win the league title.

Redditt led the Scots in scoring with 18 points and had three baskets from outside the arc, while Jr. C Isaac Thaler (Middleville, MI/Thornapple-Kellogg) finished with 14 points and Sr. F Ryan DeHaan (Rockford, MI/Rockford) added 12 for Alma. One of the telling stats for the Scots, on Wedneday, was 24 team turnovers and only five assists, making it difficult for the team to establish any kind of rhythm offensively.

On the boards, Alma held their own and DeHaan led the way with seven, while Redditt and Thaler added six apiece. Fr. F Terry Brown (Chicago, IL/De LaSalle) contributed four rebounds as well.

Alma continues MIAA action this Saturday, when they travel to Olivet, to take on the league rival Comets, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The next home contest for the Scots will be next Wednesday, January 28, when the Scots welcome Albion College to Cappaert Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
