ALMA MENS'S BASKETBALL DEFEATS TRINE 77-65

On Wednesday, the Alma Men’s Basketball team hosted its first MIAA league game of the 2008-09 season and feasted on some home cookin’, as the Scots defeated Trine University by a margin of 77-65 at Cappaert Gymnasium. The win improved the squad to 1-2 in league play and 3-10 overall, while the Thunder dropped to 0-3 in the MIAA and 4-10 on the season.

After trailing 2-0 in the first two minutes and then tying it at 2-2 with 16:43 left in the first half, Alma never trailed again after G Jordan Redditt (So., Brighton, MI/Jesuit) scored on a lay-up at the 16:11 mark. The Scots used tough defense and an efficient offense to open up a 14-point advantage at 22-8 just past the midway mark of the initial frame.

The Thunder showed some fight however, and cut the lead to 22-17 after a 9-0 run at the 7:20 mark, but the Scots answered and finished the first half on a 18-7 run that gave them a 40-24 lead heading into halftime. The Scots shot 46% in the first half, while limiting Trine to just 31% shooting from the field.

The second half was all about ball control and maintaining the lead and the Scots passed with flying colors. The teams traded baskets for much of the first part of the half and Alma was able to open up its biggest lead of the game at 20 points, 53-33, when G Kevin Ginther (So., Harbor Beach, MI/Harbor Beach) hit a jumper seven minutes into the final frame.

Again, Trine hung tough and was able to cut the deficit to eight points twice, the last being at 68-60 with 3:31 remaining in the contest. However, the young Scots squad scored the next four points for a 12-point lead and never looked back and closed out the game and the 77-65 victory. For the game, the Scots finished with a season-high 54% shooting from the field, while limiting the Thunder to just 31%. Alma also had the edge on the boards by a 40-39 margin.

Redditt led the scoring for Alma with 19 points, but three other Scots players scored in double-digits as well – C Isaac Thaler (Jr., Middleville, MI/Thornapple-Kellogg), with a season-high 18, F Ryan DeHaan (Rockford, MI/Rockford) 13 and Ginther with 10. DeHaan had five assists and a team-high eight rebounds, while Redditt, F Terry Brown (Fr., Chicago, IL/De LaSalle) and F Marshawn Chamberlain (Fr., Chicago, IL/De LaSalle) each had five boards.

The Scots look to make it two in a row on Saturday, when they host Adrian College at Cappaert Gymnasium, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
