SCOTS MEN'S HOOPS DROPS LEAGUE OPENER TO KZOO, 69-65

 The Alma Scots Men’s basketball opened the 2008-09 MIAA season on the road on Wednesday night and came up on the short end of a 69-65 decision against league rival Kalamazoo College. The loss dropped the Scots to 2-9 on the year, while the Hornets improved to 5-5 on the young campaign.

After a close start to the game, Kalamazoo made a run and entered halftime with a 39-25 advantage. The Hornets shot a sizzling 51% from the field in the first frame, while Alma made nine of 30 shots for 30% mark in half number one. The Scots were also good on three shots from beyond the arc in the first half.

The Scots fought back hard in the second half and tied the score at 61-61 with 3:45 left in the contest, the only time in the game that the Hornets did not have a lead. However, Kalamazoo was able to outscore Alma 8-4 in those last minutes and hold on to the league victory.

For the game, Alma shot 36% from the field, including eight for 27 from three-point land (30%), while the Hornets finished the contest with 48% shooting and just one of 10 from beyond the arc.

G Cory Schneider (Fr., Carson City, MI/Carson City) led Alma with 16 points, including four three-pointers, and also had a team-high five assists. F Ryan DeHaan (Sr., Rockford, MI/Rockford) grabbed a squad-best 12 rebounds, including eight off of the offensive glass, and added 13 points and four assists as well. The other double-figure scorer in the game for the Scots was G Jordan Redditt (So., Chicago, IL/Jesuit), who finished with 14 points on the evening.

Alma continues league play on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Grand Rapids, to take on league rival Calvin College beginning at 3:00 p.m. The first MIAA home game for the Scots is next Wednesday, when they host Trine University for a 7:30 contest at Cappaert Gymnasium.

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
