ALMA MEN'S BASKETBALL NOTCHES FIRST WIN OF SEASON

The Scots Men’s basketball team hit the road on Friday evening, in search of its first win of the 2008-09 season and came back with a 76-51 victory over host Oberlin College. Alma improved to 1-7 on the year and will now look forward to a back-to-back series with Finlandia University.

Alma led 38-24 after one half and then was able to outscore Oberlin by a 38-27 total in the second half to hold on to the victory.

Four Scots players finished in double figures – C Isaac Thayler (Middleville. MI) with 14, G Jordan Redditt (Detroit, MI) and G Cory Schneider (Carson City, MI) with 13 and F Terry Brown (Chicago, IL), who finished with ten points on the night.

On a night where the Scots outshot Oberlin by a 50% to 30% margin, Schneider led the way from beyond the arc by banging home three of five three-pointers. In addition, Alma outrebounded Oberlin 45-23, led by Schneider’s ten rebounds while F Ryan DeHaan (Rockford, MI) added nine off the glass rebounds.  Redditt and Schneider also led the Scots with four assists a piece in the victory.

The Scots will play their next games against Finlandia on two consecutive days – December 19 and 20 – at St. Ignace High School. The games are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.

The memory and spiritual ideals of the late Bishop Thomas Makarios remain alive in a figurative sculpture that was dedicated in May 2009 near the center of campus. The Bishop, professor of religious studies at Alma for 25 years, was founder of the American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church of India and the first Metropolitan Bishop of Canada, United Kingdom and Europe, and South Africa.

Terry Smith

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
