SCOTS MEN'S BASKETBALL LOSES TO MADONNA 71-61

Saturday night saw the 2008 MIAA/WHAC Men’s Basketball Classic come to a conclusion with the Alma Scots dropping a 71-61 decision to Madonna University at Cappaert Gymnasium. Olivet College won the night’s first game by a score of 83-73 over the University of Michigan-Dearborn and finished the two-day event with a record of 2-0. Both UM-Dearborn and Madonna were 1-1, while the Scots finished 0-2.


In Alma’s game against Madonna, the Scots had a rough start to each half, fought hard to make it close, and then came up a bit short in the end. After a 6-0 start of the game for Madonna, the Crusaders twice led by as much as 14 points, the last with 2:15 remaining in the half, before Alma sophomore guard Jordan Redditt (Detroit, MI) hit two three-pointers to cut the lead to 35-27 at halftime.

To begin the second half, Madonna went on a 11-2 run to increase the lead to 46-29 with 15:54 left in the game. Again, the Scots fought hard and cut the Crusaders’ advantage to 53-50 with 6:27 remaining in the contest. However, after a timeout, Madonna went on a 6-0 run and never looked back for their first victory of the season. With the loss, Alma is now 0-7 on the 2008-09 season, while the Crusaders left Scotland, U.S.A. with a mark of 1-9.

Redditt led the Scots with 25 points, including four three-pointers, while freshman guard Cory Schneider (Carson City, MI) contributed 13 points and three from outside the arc. Senior forward Ryan DeHaan led the team with eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

For the game, Alma shot 40%, including 35% from past the three-point arc, while Madonna finished at 48% and 38% for three-pointers. The rebound edge went to the Crusaders by a margin of 33-27.  A difference maker in the game was Madonna senior guard Cedric Sims, who led both teams with game-highs of 27 points and nine rebounds.

Alma next plays on Friday, December 12, when they hit the road to take on Oberlin College for a 7:30 p.m. contest. The next home game for the Scots will be on January 14, 2009, when they host MIAA rival Trine University in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Cappaert Gymnasium.

Alma College students have the ability to design their own area of academic concentration, with the assistance of a faculty advisor, to meet specific educational or career goals. In recent years, students have graduated with Programs of Emphasis majors in such fields as arts management, archaeology and anthropology, environmental policy and community advocacy, Foreign Service and international law, and music technology and digital media.

Terry Smith

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
