ALMA MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM LOSES TO MICHIGAN-DEARBORN 73-64 ON FRIDAY

The Alma Men’s Basketball team hosted the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Friday in the 2008 MIAA/WHAC (Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference) Classic and dropped a 73-64 decision. The loss, played at Cappaert Gymnasium, dropped the Scots to 0-6 on the year, while the Wolves improved to 4-5.

In the early game, Olivet College defeated Madonna University in a come-from-behind 70-66 victory. On Saturday, the Scots will take on Madonna at 8:00 p.m. at Cappaert, following a 6:00 p.m. contest between the Comets of Olivet and UM-Dearborn.

In Friday’s game, the Wolves led the gritty Scots by just one point, 34-33, after one half before increasing its lead in the second half with some athletic inside play. UM-Dearborn shot 53% in the final frame as they outscored Alma by a margin of 39-31. The Scots hung tough in the second half and tried to stay close by converting five three-pointers, but it was not enough in the end.

Jordan Redditt led Alma with 18 points and had four of the team’s nine three-pointers in the game. Ryan DeHaan added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Terry Brown had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. Kevin Ginther chipped in seven points, five rebounds and shared a team-best three assists with Julius Porter. Cory Schneider added eight points, while Tommy Erickson finished with seven for Alma.

For the game, the Scots shot 33% from the field, while the Wolves finished with a 49% shooting percentage. Alma knocked down nine three-pointers to UM-Dearborn’s six and the Scots finished with a 37-36 rebound advantage.

Alma is one of seven Michigan colleges and universities to hold membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the national leadership society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character. Terry Smith

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
