ALMA MEN'S BASKETBALL LOSES OPENER TO MANCHESTER

The Alma Men’s Basketball Team opened up its 2008-09 season on Saturday and dropped a 79-65 decision to Manchester College at Cappaert Gymnasium. Despite the loss, Scots Head Coach Terry Smith was optimistic about the team’s effort and what it means for the future.

“We may have lost the game but we definitely showed we have a better team than in 2007-08,” said Smith. “I was pleased with the effort and we are playing with ten new guys. If we can get better in the post, we will have a chance to compete. When Matt Brown finishes with football, he will give us an athletic player down below and that will help.”

Manchester led 33-28 after one half as the Scots played an aggressive style of play and hit some three-pointers that kept the game very competitive. Alma was outscored 46-37 in the second half but the game was close to the end.

Statistically, Jordan Redditt led the the Scots with 19 points, five assists and three steals, while Julius Porter added 14 points, four assists and two steals. The other double-figure scorer for the Scots was Ryan DeHaan, who finished the game with 11 points for the Scots.

Alma continues its 2008-09 season on Monday when they hit the road to play Anderson College, with a 7:30 p.m. start.

The Scots’ next home game is scheduled for November 25, against Concordia College. Start time is 7:00 p.m. at Cappaert Gymnasium.
