MEN'S BASKETBALL: Scots' Season Ends at the Hands of the Dutchmen, 75-51

Feb. 27, 2008

The Alma College Men's Basketball Team (3-21. 3-11) was faced with the task of playing the top team in the MIAA, Hope College (22-3. 13-1), in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament and was defeated by the talented Dutchmen by the score of 75-51.

The Scots kept the game close in the first half, going into the break trailing 28-18 and closed the gap even more in the second half, pulling within eight points with 15:00 left in the game. However, the Dutchmen took their game to the next level and pulled away to get the win and the right to keep playing in the MIAA Tournament.

Junior Matt Brown (Midland) stepped up and played on of his best games of the years as he led the Maroon and Cream with 22 points and eight rebounds while shooting five of six from downtown. Freshman Jordan Redditt (Detroit) put together a decent performance despite a poor shooting night and added nine points in the loss. Seniors Venias Jordan (Detroit/Cody) and Josh Shattuck (Spring Lake) chipped in nine points and four rebounds while both playing 30+ minutes in their final game for Alma.

With tonight's loss, the Scots finish their first season under Head Coach Terry Smith with an overall record of 3-21. While the record may not reflect it, many close to the program would consider this year a positive step in the right direction. The Scots only won three games, but lost five games by five points or less and were competitive in almost every game they played. The Scots, players and coaches, now turn their sites to off-season training and recruiting in hopes of continuing the turn around that was started under Coach Smith in the 2007-08 season.
