MEN'S BASKEBALL: Scots Edge Out Olivet, Win 65-63

Jan. 19, 2008

Alma, Mi.- The Alma College Scots (1-3, 1-12) faced off against the Comets of Olivet College (0-4, 4-10) in a conference showdown and came away with their first win under new Head Coach Terry Smith by the score of 65-63.

The Maroon and Cream came out on fire early in the game behind great ball movement and three point shooting and led for most of the first half. Olivet rallied before hafltime and took a four point lead into the break. The Comets came out of halftime and extended their lead to double digits before Coach Smith took a gamble and employed a five gaurd lineup hoping to neutralize one of the best post tandems in the league. The gamble paid off as the small and quicker Scots quickly erased the lead and kept the pressure on until the final buzzer sounded with the Scots on top 65-63, recording their first win of the season and the first of many under Coach Smith.

Providing much of the Scots offense was junior Ryan DeHaan (Rockford) who shot a ridiculous six for six from the three point line and ended with 18 points and five rebounds. Also chipping in for the Scots was freshman Jordan Redditt (Detroit) who scored 15 points and senior Josh Shattuck (Spring Lake). Junior Matt Brown (Midland) had a tough day in the paint but muscled out seven boards and six points while playing stout defense on the Comets' bigs.

Coming off this win, the Scots have four days to prepare for the Dutchmen of Hope College who will be traveling to Cappaert Gymnasium this Wednesday the 24th of January for a 7:30 tip-off.
