Isaac Smith Named MIAA Player of the Week



Alma senior forward and captain Isaac Smith of Merrill added to his league-leading scoring and  rebounding numbers with a double-double in the Scots' 76-62 win over Tri-State. He scored 28 points and grabbed 10 reboundsto improve his league averages to 22.6 points and 7.1 rebounds.

In the game he shot 8-for-16, including 3-for-6 on three-pointers. He was 9-for-9 on free throws and had four assists. Earlier in the week, he played all 40 minutes in a 73-64 loss to Albion, scoring 24 points and grabbing five rebounds. He shot 8-for-13 and was 7-for-8 on free throws with five assists and two steals.

This season, Smith has put up double digits in all but one game, scoring a career-high 34 points against Kalamazoo on Feb. 3. His double-double on Feb. 10 against Tri-State was his seventh of the season.

Smith and the Scots return to the hardwood Wednesday (Feb. 14) when they host Hope College at 7:30 p.m.

 

Alma is one of seven Michigan colleges and universities to hold membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the national leadership society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character. The College also has 19 other national departmental honor societies.

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
