Isaac Smith Scores More Than Half Alma's Points in MIAA Loss

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Alma men's basketball got an enormous contribution from senior captain Isaac Smith (Merrill) Saturday evening on the road at Kalamazoo as he scored 34 of Alma's 66 points in a 73-66 loss to the Hornets. Alma falls to 2-18 overall and 1-9 in the MIAA.

The first half of the game saw the scored tied three different occasions in a truly balanced battle with Alma leading by two entering the break.

Coming out of the half, Alma lost the lead but regained it around the 11-minute mark on a three-pointer from Smith to go up by one. But the Scots never held the advantage again, despite a back-and-forth battle down the stretch.

The Scots shot just under 60 percent for the game while holding the Hornets to under 50 percent. The largest difference-maker was rebounds as Alma was outrebounded 38-29.

Other scorers for the Scots included Lance Gardner (Lansing/Mason) and Venias Jordan (Detroit/Cody) who each contributed six points. Sam Machuta (Mt. Pleasant) added six blocks, one shy of his career-best and school-record seven earlier this year.

The Scots return to action this Wednesday at 8 p.m. when they host Albion College.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ’08, students toured cultural sites in Argentina, studied lizards in Jamaica, analyzed World War II topics at the British National Archives in London, performed music in Italy, and examined the natural wonders of New Zealand.
