Scots Open Season at Manchester College Tip-Off Tournament

ALMA, Mich. – It’s that time of year – men’s basketball kicks off this weekend with the Manchester College Tip-Off Tournament in North Manchester, Ind.

“We’re excited to finally face someone other than ourselves,” said sixth-year head coach Ed Kohtala. “This week we’ve seen a handful of players join the team after the football team ended its season, so we have some additional momentum and energy in practices, but we’re looking forward to opening our season.”

The Scots are set to face the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds in the first round of action on Friday at 4 p.m. UW-Eau Claire is coming off a 12-14 2005-06 season and return all five starters this year. In contrast, the Scots return just one starter to this year’s roster in senior forward Isaac Smith (Merrill). Smith was out due to injury for the first half of the season but proved to be effective in 15 games to close out the year. Alma ended the 2005-06 schedule 10-16 overall.

The game will mark the first of the season for both teams, though both the Blugolds and Scots have scrimmaged throughout the pre-season.

Host Manchester College will face Eureka College in the night game on Friday. The winner of both games advances to the championship game at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, with the losers of both games facing in the consolation game at 5 p.m.

Alma students can explore the environmental wonders of the Galapagos Islands, practice Spanish language skills, study Ecuadorian culture, complete coursework in business finance, and fulfill a South American internship in entrepreneurship through Alma College’s one-of-a-kind partnership with Equatorialis University in Quito, Ecuador.
