Alma Falls To Lake Superior State, 94-82

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.
– The Alma College men's basketball team dropped its second road game of the season Monday (Nov. 29) to the Lake Superior State Lakers in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., 94-82. AJ Jones (Detroit/Martin Luther King) paced the Scots, pouring in 29 points, shooting 50 percent from three-point range (5-for-10).

Jones led the team in rebounds with eight while Jamie Diener (Hemlock/Hemlock) grabbed seven. Mark Barnes (Saginaw/Saginaw) added 16 points and three rebounds in the effort while Ricky Clarkson (Saginaw/Heritage) led the team with four assists.

With the loss, Alma falls to 1-2 on the season while the Lakers improve to 2-2.

The Maroon and Cream went without a free throw in the first half and went a perfect 7-of-7 in the second stanza while the Lakers made it to the charity stripe 39 times in the game, including 32 times in the second half.

LSSU led by just three points at the half, 39-36, but pulled away with a 55-point second half, shooting 50 percent from the field.

Alma returns to action Saturday, Dec. 4 at 3 p.m., against Manchester in Manchester, Ind.

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
