Anthony Jones and Eric Jones Receive All-MIAA Men's Basketball Awards

Although a rebuilding year for the Scots’ men’s basketball team, Freshman Anthony Jones, Detroit (Martin Luther King), and senior Eric Jones, Bay City (Central), stood out against their MIAA competitors and were recognized with All-MIAA nods. Anthony Jones earned First-Team All-MIAA for his efforts and Eric Jones received an Honorable Mention spot on the team.

Anthony Jones was the head of a very promising freshman class brought in by third year coach Ed Kohtala. Jones instantly contributed to the team by leading the Scots in almost every statistical category including points, rebounds, steals, assists, and blocks. “Anthony has a chance to become one of the all-time greats at Alma College,” commented Kohtala. He was also quick to point out that Jones not only led the MIAA in conference points scored but was also one of the best rebounders from the guard position in the entire league. Jones’ 250 conference points assured him the MIAA scoring title and made him the first freshman to accomplish the feat in decades.

Eric Jones was the only senior on the Scots’ roster and was the glue that held the young team together. “Eric is a special kid, he was the perfect senior to have with our group of young guys,” said Coach Kohtala. Jones’ contributions to the team extended further than on and off the court leadership, as he was the Scots’ second leading scorer and provided them with a physical toughness in the paint that allowed them to match up against the other big men in the conference. Jones was well known for his tireless work ethic and the example that he set in the gym and in the classroom during his four years as an Alma College Scot.

Alma College is one of eight Michigan colleges and universities — and one of 270 out of 4,411 colleges and universities in the nation, or 6 percent — to hold membership in The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization.
