Hall of Fame History

John S. Pingel's Remarks of May 25, 1971

Original Remarks - Alma College Sports Hall of Fame
Lansing, Michigan - Tuesday, May 25, 1971

"By establishing the sports hall of fame at this time, Alma College is saying to the young people on her campus: 'Here, look over here! Here are men and women who have gone before you, who have walked these tree-shaded paths and studied in these ivy-colored classrooms and gone on to achieve success, both on the playing field and off. Here are our high achievers. See what they have done.

"We are saying that these alumni athletes have found, through experience in the world's most competitive and rewarding society, which lessons learned in college were the most important ones -- important to worldly success and, even more, to life's spiritual achievements.

"We learned in two places. In the classroom, we learned the lessons that science and history and man's past have taught. In extra-curricular activities outside the classroom -- but still inside the college -- we learned about ourselves."

- John S. Pingel

Alma is one of only 100 colleges and universities to be named to the Templeton Honor Roll in the Templeton Guide: Colleges That Encourage Character Development.
