The Significance of an Experience

Remarks by Dr. Charles A. Gray, May 25, 1971

Excellence has no common denominator. Rather, excellence is typified by its uncommonness and its reflection of achievement far above normal effort and reward.

Tonight we are here to salute some of Alma College's famous sons whose early achievements were demonstrated in the area of competition. The athlete in action is privileged to enjoy three levels of reward:

  1. the thrill of competition, contrasting the exhiliration of victory and the finality of defeat.
  2. the carry over lessons learned on the playing field that have an upward extension into business and community life, and, the privilege.
  3. of memories that linger through the years recalling the joy of a vigorous and dedicated life. This latter level of competitive reward is sensitized tonight.
In installing this charter class at this initial Alma College Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet, we are reminded of the significance of an experience. It is our responsibility to recognize excellence without compromise, to reward extraordinary achievement, and to honor athletes whose heralded feats evoke the imagination. Within this framework, we challenge and charge the legions of Alma lettermen, alumni, and friends to establish and maintain the Alma College Athletic Hall of Fame that will strengthen the Alma Scot tradition recognizing the excellence of men amongst men.

Alma College students have the ability to design their own area of academic concentration, with the assistance of a faculty advisor, to meet specific educational or career goals. In recent years, students have graduated with Programs of Emphasis majors in such fields as arts management, archaeology and anthropology, environmental policy and community advocacy, foreign service and international law, and music technology and digital media.
