Alma Football Loses Season-Finale at Albion College

On a day that 18 Alma College Football Seniors took the field for the last time, hopes were high and a win would give the Scots a chance for a tie for second place in the MIAA. It was not to be, however, as host Albion College defeated Alma by a score of 60-10, on a beautiful late Fall Michigan afternoon.

The loss meant the Scots finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 5-5 and 3-3 in the MIAA. The Britons concluded the campaign with a 4-2 league record and an overall mark of 4-6.

Alma took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter as PK Heath Laugal's 20-yard boot was the only score of the game at that point. Things went downhill from there for the Scots as Albion cut the lead to 3-2 on safety resulting from a snap going over the head of Alma QB Mackenzie McGrady and out of the endzone. The Britons went on to score 16 more points in the quarter to go into halftime with an 18-3 advantage.

The second half proved to be tough for Alma as well, but the Scots did find the endzone when McGrady connected with WR Tyler Wise on a 12-yard touchdown strike in the fourth quarter.

McGrady finished his career by going 22 of 44 for 214 yards, with one score and two interceptions. Wise led all Scots receivers with seven grabs for 60 yards and the touchdown, while WR Marc Mankowski added four catches for 41 yards. Defensively, DB Bart Blystone led the Scots with seven tackles, one for a loss, while LB Conrad Bovee had 6.5 tackles, with one behind the line of scrimmage. In addition, LB Ed Mason recorded a sack for Alma.

Even though Saturday afternoon's result was not what they wanted, this group of seniors can hold their head high and celebrate what they have contributed to Alma Football over their four years.

NOTE: Britons RB Clinton Orr led Albion with touchdown runs of 26, 71 and 90 yards and finished the afternoon with an MIAA record 306 rushing yards on 24 carries.
