Scots Football loses tough one to Adrian 7-0, first shutout loss since 2003

The Alma Football team hit the road on Saturday to take on Adrian College and left with a 7-0 defeat that saw the Scots get shutout for the first time since 2003. The loss dropped the Scots to 4-4 overall in 2009 and 2-2 in the MIAA, while the Bulldogs improved to 5-3 on the season and 3-1 in the league.

In a game that was not indicative of how the Scots' contests usually go, Saturday's game on a windy Saturday afternoon became a defensive contest and was decided on a late first half turnover.

The Scots had a chance to take the lead early in the second half, but the drive stalled on the Adrian three-yard line as Alma RB Jon Reed was stopped cold on a fourth and one opportunity. That was the closest the Scots got to scoring in this very defensive game.

Adrian took advantage of a Alma mistake late in the first half, when Scots QB Mackenzie McGrady was intercepted by the Knights' Jeff Makowski at the Alma 30-yard line with 18 seconds left. Just two plays later, the home team connected on the decisive score as QB Mike McGee hit WR Steve Freeman for a 30-yard touchdown strike. It gave the Knights the 7-0 lead they never gave up in the win.

Alma hosts MIAA rival Hope College next Saturday afternoon at Bahlke Field, with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
