FOOTBALL TEAMS HITS THE ROAD AND DEFEATS ROCKFORD COLLEGE 51-3

Alma's Football team hit the road on Saturday afternoon and came away victorious when they defeated Rockford College by a score of 51-3 to improve their record to 2-1 on the 2009 season. Rockford fell to 0-3 as they saw their visitors from Mid-Michigan take a 28-0 lead after one quarter and never look back. Alma Sr. QB Mackenzie McGrady played a part in seven touchdowns, four tosses and three scampers in the victory.

In the game, Alma had 532 yards of total offense and 27 first downs to 100 yards and nine first downs for Rockford. McGrady finished 22 of 40 for 331 yards and the three touchdown passes. His scoring connections went to Corey Wangler (35 yards), Barak Henderson twice (11 and 20) and John Roberts (three). McGrady rushing scores came from three, 38 and one yard out during the afternoon.

Defensively, LB Brent Willis led the team with seven tackles, including two for a loss, while Jeremy Suave had six stops, two for a loss. Jamie Young and Eric Santure combined on a sack for a defense that never let Rockford get untracked.

Alma stays on the road next weekend with a long trip to take on Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Eastern time.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. "It's a huge honor," says faculty director Dave Zerbe. "You can't apply to perform there; they seek you out."

Jim Cole ‘74 enters his 18th season at the helm of the Scots. In 2004, Cole led the Scots to the MIAA title and a berth in the NCAA Division III national playoffs, the second time in three years the Maroon and Cream advanced to the NCAA postseason.

A former All-MIAA and All-District quarterback for the Scots, Cole draws on the championship experiences of playing for the 1970, ‘71 and ‘72 MIAA co-champions and coaching the 1988 co-champ’s defense.

Cole sports a career mark of 105-67-0, making him Alma’s winningest football coach.
