ALMA FOOTBALL COMPLETES FIRST PRACTICE SESSION OF 2009

Like it or not, Fall is nearing and the 2009 Alma College Football team returned to the field on Sunday at Bahlke Field for their first practice of the season under the watchful eyes of Head Coach Jim Cole and his coaching staff.

“We had right around 120 kids show up today for the first practice of the season, but things have been moving so fast, we won’t have a final count for a few days,” said Cole, in his 19th season at the helm of the Scots. “We are excited about the kids we have and on this first day, our agility stations allow every coach to see every player for evaluation.”

Alma is coming off a 2008 5-5 overall record (3-3 in the MIAA) and the coaching staff is excited about the offseason efforts of their student athletes. The schedule is challenging with six road games and just four home games at the friendly confines of Bahlke Field and the Alma campus.

“Coming in, most of the players know their positions, but there will be some flexibilty and that is what you try to identify in these first days of camp,” commented Cole. “We will have five hard days of practice this week and also have walk-thrus, all of which is mandated by the NCAA. But, it will give us a good idea of what we have on our roster and all of our coaches agree that this is going to be fun”

Alma will scrimmage at Northwood University on August 27, and are scheduled to open up the regular season with a game at Bluffton University on September 5. The Scots will play Illinois Wesleyan University for their home opener on September 12 in Alma.
