FOOTBALL: Scots 21, Bulldogs 30

Nov. 10, 2007

The Alma College Football Team was one half away from bringing home a share of the MIAA Championship before going flat and falling to the Adrian Bulldogs by the score of 30-21.

The Scots dominated the first half, leading 14-3 at the break, and scored the first points of the second half as junior linebacker John Vance (Algonac/Algonac) stepped in the passing lane and picked of an Adrian Bulldog pass for an 82 yard touchdown return, giving the Scots the 21-3 lead. However, a Bulldog touchdown followed by an onside kick recovery and then five straight Scots turnovers and three more touchdowns by Adrian, the Scots chances at a piece of the MIAA Title were lost and they finished the 2007 campaign with a 5-5 overall record and a third place finish in conference play.

The Scots offense played well in the first half, but after having to wait until the seven minute mark in the third quarter to return to the field, looked out of rythm at best. Mackenzie McGrady (Portland/Portland) played well in spots and still managed to put up good numbers recording 155 pass yards on 18 of 31 and rushed for 72 more on 16 attempts. McGrady also threw two touchdown passes, one of which was caught by senior Joe Cline (Ithaca/Ithaca) who had a quiet game for his standards, only catching four passes for 64 yards. With today's game in the books, Cline ends his career with the Scots as the most prolific receiver in school history have caught 234 passes for 3282 yards and 29 touchdowns, averaging a remarkable 91.2 yards per game in his 36 games as a Scot.

The Alma defense did what they could but simply got wore down in the second half as the Bulldogs resorted to basically a single wing style offense that pounded away against the exhausted Scots defense that saw way to much of the field in the second half. Leading the way for the defense was junior Kyle Percival (Lansing/Waverly) who recorded nine total tackles in the contest. Fellow junior Zach Comer (Alma/Alma) also added nine total tackles for the Scots in the loss.

The 2007-08 Alma College Football seniors were a group that excelled on the field as well as in the classroom and they will be remembered for their dedication to the Maroon and Cream and their tireless efforts in representing the Scots.
