The Match Up

The Alma College Scots come into this week's game off of a big conference win over Wisconsin-Lutheran by the score 28-20. Albion enters the game after losing to Olivet last week by the score 6-24. Last year, the Scots defeated to the Brits by the score 45-35, however Albion leads the all-time series with a record of 58-42-5 against the Scots.

Scouting Albion 

The Britons use a run first style offense that tries to create opportunities for a play-action passing game. Through six games, Albion has attempted 230 rushes for 954 yards and 152 passes for 1075 yards and the Briton's 159 yards/game on the ground is good enough for third in the MIAA. 

Calling the signals for the Brits is sophomore quarterback Blake Evans who has completed 64 of 147 passes with 11 interceptions and five touchdowns. Evans' favorite target is senior receiver Josh Silvernail who leads the team with 24 receptions, averaging nearly 100 yards/game and over 24 yards per reception.

Junior running back Bill Bacarella has done a great job running the ball for the Brits, averaging five yards a carry in his 119 attempts this season. Bacarella has rushed for six hundred yards in six games and has also scored six touchdowns on the ground.

Junior DB Chris Haines has played outstanding for the Brits this season, racking up 53 total tackles and 3 interceptions for the #2 ranked pass defense in the MIAA. 

Last Week's Action: Alma 28-WLC 20 

Alma, Mi. - Behind a strong performance by sophomore Quarterback Marc Mankowski (Mt. Pleasant/Mt. Pleasant) in his first college start, the Scots pulled out the victory over conference foe Wisconsin Lutheran by the score 28-20.

The Scots jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 11 yard touchdown run by Kyle Ryan (Reese/Reese) capping off a 13 play 83 yard drive, and a 66 yard punt returnm taken to the house by All-American Joe Cline (Ithaca/Ithaca).

The Warriors battled back scoring two touchdowns of their own and with a missed PAT went into the half trailing the Scots by the score 13-14.

The Scots came out in the second half and domintated the ball, pounding the Warriors with the run all half and scoring two more touchdowns before giving up a late junk score, taking home the 28-20 win.

Mankowski played solid for the Scots all game, completing 18 of 33 passes for 213 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. Cline led the team in receiving with seven catches for 99 yards and touchdown to go with the one he scored on the punt return. With the seven receptions, Cline passed Mark Boehms '02 on the career receptions list at Alma College and now sits alone at 208.

Ryan kept the chains moving and the clock rolling with his effort, gaining 92 yards on 18 carries and scoring two touchdowns.

The Alma College defense had its best game of the season and were key in the victory. Kyle Percival (Lansing/Waverly) led the Scots in tackles with 11 and John Vance (Algonac/Algonac) recorded seven. Zac Zanotti (Bay City/Bay City Central) had a great game on the D-Line for the Scots, netting six total tackles, three for loss, and recovering a fumble.

 

 

In the more than 100 years since its founding, Alma has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive. Today, Alma features a marching band clad in Kilts, a Scottish dance troupe, student pipers and its own tartan. Each year, the College hosts the Alma Highland Festival and Games, which feature traditional Scottish games and revelry.

Jim Cole
Graduation: 1974

Jim Cole '74 enters his 17th season at the helm of the Scots. In 2004, Cole led the Scots to the MIAA title and a berth in the NCAA Division III national playoffs, the second time in three years the Maroon and Cream advanced to the NCAA postseason.

A former All-MIAA and All-District quarterback for the Scots, Cole draws on the championship experiences of playing for the 1970, '71 and '72 MIAA co-champions and coaching the 1988 co-champ's defense.

Cole sports a career mark of 94-60-0, placing him tied in all-time wins at the College with Brooks (94-86-0, 20 seasons).
