An Update From Salem, Virginia - Josh Brehm Accepts Gagliardi Trophy

It's been a wild ride the last week or so for senior Josh Brehm and the Alma College community.

On Tuesday, an official announcement was made that the Alma Scots had among them the best of the best as senior quarterback Josh Brehm was named the 2006 Gagliardi Trophy winner, given annually to the top Division III football player in the nation.

On Wednesday, Brehm, his father, head football coach Jim Cole and his son Scotty and offensive coordinator John Leister and his son Jarrett boarded a plane bound for Salem, Va., where they are participating in festivities surrounding the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.

Today, the group was on hand as Josh accepted the 2-foot-tall, 64-pound trophy at the Rotary Club of Salem's monthly meeting.

"Josh has been a class act throughout the trip," noted Leister. "And he's been at the YMCA every day, working out too. This is just a really neat experience."

The trophy presentation began at noon today in Salem. Mount Union and UW-Whitewater will square off Saturday in the Stagg Bowl, the DIII National Championship game. This afternoon, the Alma travel group was given a tour of the stadium and facilities and was invited to watch perennial powerhouse Mount Union's practice.

Tomorrow, the group will attend the annual ball in honor of the teams and on Saturday will be on the field to watch the national championship game.

Alma is one of only 100 colleges and universities to be named to the Templeton Honor Roll in the Templeton Guide: Colleges That Encourage Character Development.
