Scots Lose Second MIAA Game in 28-24 Loss to Olivet

Box Score

OLIVET, Mich. - Alma football lost to Olivet College Saturday 28-24 to fall to 4-4 on the season and 3-2 in the MIAA.

Josh Brehm was 38-for-58 with an interception but had three passing touchdowns and 363 yards while Joe Cline had 153 yards receiving on the day with two touchdown catches from Brehm. Nate Jervey was the other scoring receiver with three catches for 91 yards.

Olivet scored once in the first quarter and again early in the second to take a 14-0 lead. Brehm found Jervey on a 34-yard pass to make the score 14-7 but the Comets responded, scoring again with 5:18 remaining in the first half to make the score 21-7. But Brehm found Cline to narrow the gap and Dan Seals converted on a 35-yard kick just before halftime to make the score 21-17 in favor of the Comets at halftime.

With just 1:58 remaining in the third quarter, Brehm found Cline again to go-ahead 24-21 but a Lonnie Jones run early in the fourth made the score 28-24 and it stayed that way until the game's end. Alma had it's chance, though, with 35 seconds left at their own 32 yard line. A Brehm-Cline connection moved the ball to the 39 yard line. Another Cline catch moved the ball across midfield and gave Alma a first down. Brehm looked for Jervey on the final play of the game, but the pass was incomplete to end the game.

The Scots return to action next Saturday at Kalamazoo at 1 p.m.
