Joe Cline Named MIAA Offensive Co-Player of the Week
Alma College junior wideout Joe Cline of Ithaca has been named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week, an honor he shares with Hope junior tailback David Booko.Last week, Cline set a new school record for single-game receptions with 17 against the Flying Dutchmen in a 49-43 heartbreaking loss. Cline's 17 passes for three touchdowns and 186 yards - another career-best garnered him Player of the Week honors for the secocnd time this season.
Cline has put four 100-yard receiving games on the books in five games this season. His career best is the 186 last week. His 175 yards against Cornell College was his previous best. The school record is 237 yards set in 1984 by Al Goetz against Olivet Nazarene.
Cline averages 138.2 yards receiving per game and has made spectacular catches throughout the season. His total receiving yardage for the year stands at 691 with five games remaining on the schedule. If he continues, he has the opportunity to break the single-season receiving yards record at Alma College. It currently stands at 1,116 yards set by Mark Boehms in 2002. Boehms and Brian Pierce are the only receivers in school history to register 1,000-plus yard seasons as Pierce had 1,044 yards in 1999. Each of those years the Scots went on to win the MIAA Championship.
Cline is eighth on the career yards receiving list with 1,721 entering this weekend's game against Wisconsin Lutheran in Milwaukee, Wis. With six more receptions, Cline will set a personal career best for receptions in a season. He had 60 catches a season ago for 874 yards.
His three touchdowns against Hope marked the second consecutive game in which Cline has had three TD grabs. He is the only receiver in school history to have two games with three scoring receptions. With two more TD catches, he will break the school record.
Alma travels to Milwaukee for a 1 p.m. game Saturday, Oct. 14.
