Second Half Scots' Downfall as They Fall at Wittenberg, 42-24

Final Statistics

TIFFIN, Ohio - The Scots fell to 1-2 on the season Saturday (Sept. 23) with a 42-24 loss at Wittenberg. Despite holding the advantage in first downs (26-21), nearly double passing yards (340-182) and in total offense (508 yards to 476), the Scots could not overcome a second half slump.

Senior quarterback Josh Brehm (Ithaca) had 340 yards passing, including one touchdown, going 29-for-43 on the day. Joe Cline (Ithaca) was the favored recieving with 103 yards on seven catches, including one touchdown reception.

The Scots stormed out to score first, finding the endzone with 3:20 showing in the first quarter when Josh Brehm ran it in from two yards out. But the Tigers roared back, scoring less than three minutes later when quarterback Patrick Williams placed a 35-yard pass into Aaron Huffman's arms to tie things up at 7-7.

But the Scots put seven more points on the board two minutes into the second half with an eight-yard, Kyle Ryan (Reese) touchdown run. Dan Seals (Ithaca) was good on both PATs for the Scots. But again, Wittenberg countered two minutes later on a touchdown run from five yards out.

The high-scoring second half continued as Joe Cline was on the receiving end of an 11-yard Brehm pass. But the ensuing drive by the Tigers would be the momentum changer from the scoring perspective. Wittenberg recovered an Alma fumble and ran it back 23 yards to make the score 21-21 heading into halftime.

Coming out of the half, Dan Seals came back with a 37-yard field goal to make the score 24-21 in favor of the Scots, but Wittenberg shut down the Scots for the remainder of the game, rattling off three unanswered touchdowns - including an 83-yard touchdown run - to close the game with their victory, 42-24.
