Cline, Brehm and Hilson Earn Football Gazette Recognition

ALMA, Mich. - It may be 2006, but postseason honors continue to roll in for the Alma College football team as sophomore receiver Joe Cline (Ithaca) and junior quarterback Josh Brehm (Ithaca) were named to the Don Hansen's Football Gazette North Region Third Team.  Senior defensive end Calvin Hilson (Three Rivers) earned honorable mention from the small college football authority.

Cline ended the season as the Scots’ top receiver with 874 total receiving yards, including four touchdown catches. He was also a return specialist for the Maroon and Cream with an average of 19 yards per kick return on the season.

Brehm set new school records in several categories this season, including career passing and career total offense records, throwing for 3,179 yards on the year with 21 touchdown passes, rushing for 410 yards and 11 TDs on the ground.

Hilson was one of the Scots most potent threats on defense, putting up convincing stats across the board. His 31.5 tackles were fourth on the team, including 8.5 tackles for loss of 51 yards, seven sacks, two pass breakups and three forced fumbles.

The Alma College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team claimed its eighth consecutive regional championship at the SIFE USA Regional Competition in March 2008. The competition awards the SIFE teams that are most effective in teaching the principals of market economics through outreach projects in their communities.

Jim Cole '74 enters his 17th season at the helm of the Scots. In 2004, Cole led the Scots to the MIAA title and a berth in the NCAA Division III national playoffs, the second time in three years the Maroon and Cream advanced to the NCAA postseason.

A former All-MIAA and All-District quarterback for the Scots, Cole draws on the championship experiences of playing for the 1970, '71 and '72 MIAA co-champions and coaching the 1988 co-champ's defense.

Cole sports a career mark of 105-67-0, making him Alma's winningest football coach.
