ALMA BASEBALL DROPS GAME ONE TO TRINE 7-6

On Sunday afternoon, the Scots continued a back-to-back doubleheader with Trine University, and Alma lost game one at Klenk Park by a score of 7-6. It was a come-from-behind victory for the Thunder, who split two games on Saturday in Angola. Trine improved to 10-23 on the year and 6-15 in the MIAA, while Alma fell to 9-14 in the league play and 14-19 overall.

Alma 3B Jeremy Stephens singled to lead off the bottom of the first inning. After a sacrifice bunt and a thrown strikeout moved him to third, 1B Nate Smith had a RBI single that scored Stephens and gave the Scots a 1-0 lead.

Trine scored two in the top half of the second, on two hits and an error to take their own one-run lead. Alma notched it at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame, when RF Bobby Jock singled with two outs and C Craig Brohl moved him to third on a single. That was followed by a Stephens single that scored Jock.

Alma went up 5-2 in the bottom of the third, as they scored three runs on four hits and an error. LF Nick Townsend was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and after a strikeout, DH Adam Rezmer singled and moved to second on an error, moving Townsend to third. SS Dan Gonzalez-Morales, Jock and Brohl also singled in the inning for the Scots.

Trine scored a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, and the Scots responded with a score in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-4 advantage. After a scoreless sixth inning, Trine put up three runs in the top of the seventh, with four hits, an error and they also left the bases loaded. The Scots fought back with two hits in the bottom of the seventh, but could not score, allowing the Thunder the 7-6 win.

Jock was three for three in the game, with a run and an RBI, while Stephens had two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Brohl had two hits and an RBI and Gonzalez-Morales had two hits and and RBI as well for the Scots

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term '09, students toured cultural sites in Peru, studied alternative energy in Sweden, analyzed theatre and dance in London, and examined Native American culture at the Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota.

Judd Folske

Judd Folske

Judd Folske is entering his first year as Alma College Head Baseball Coach in the 2007-2008 season after spending two years as an assistant coach with the program. Coach Folske joined the Maroon and Cream in the fall of 2005 after stops at NCAA Division I Central Michigan University, and stints at Div. II schools Saginaw Valley State University and Ferris State University. He also serves the athletic department as assistant athletic director.

While head coach of the CMU Chippewas, Folske posted a 131-98 mark. In 2000, he finished in a tie for first in the MAC conference with a record of 41-17 (18-8). Folske retired after the 2003 season at CMU, and went to work as an assistant at SVSU, where he worked in that capacity for two seasons.
