ALMA BASEBALL LOSES SECOND GAME OF DH AS CALVIN WINS 10-5
After Alma won the first game of a league doubleheader against visiting Calvin College on Saturday, the Knights fought back and earned a split on the day with a 10-5 victory. The loss, played on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Klenk Park, dropped Alma to 3-7 in the league and 8-11 overall. The Knights improved their season mark to 11-11 and 8-4 in the MIAA.
After a scoreless first two innings, Calvin busted out with six runs in the top of the third inning off Scots Sr. P John Fillmore (Midland, MI/Midland). They had four hits in the inning and were aided by three Alma errors in the frame. So. P Justin Sluiter (McBain, MI/McBain) came in to record the final out of the inning.
The Scots responded with two runs in the bottom of their frame, as So. C Jay Sackett (Birmingham, MI/Groves) walked to lead off the inning. He moved to second on a one-out single by Fr. 2B Mike Bleise (Beal City, MI/Beal City) and scored on an RBI single by Sr. 3B Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids, MI/Fulton-Middleton).
After two more scoreless innings, Calvin extended their lead to 9-2 by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth frame. The Knights tallied the runs with two hits and two Alma errors, with two of the runs being unearned. Alma So. P Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak, MI/Royal Oak) relieved Sluiter with one out but the bases became loaded after a walk. All three runs scored on a double by Calvin 3B Jason May.
Alma responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Yourchock singled to right to start the inning, and then So. 1B Nate Smith (Battle Creek, MI/Harper Creek) reached on an error. After a fly-out and a pop-out, the Scots still had two runners on with two outs.
After Sr. SS Dan Gonzalez-Morales (Lansing, MI/Eastern) reached on an error to load the bases, pinch hitter So. Adam Rezmer (Bay City, MI/John Glenn), tripled in all three runs to cut the deficit to 9-5. However, there were no more fireworks for the Scots, and after giving up another run in the top of the seventh, Alma’s demise concluded with the 10-5 decision.
