SCOTS BASEBALL TAKES GAME 1 FROM CALVIN 11-6
Alma’s Baseball team hosted Calvin College on Saturday at a Sunny, but cool Mid-Michigan afternoon at Klenk Park, and came away with an 11-6 victory in the opener. The win, the second in a row against the Knights, improved the Scots to 3-6 in the MIAA overall, while Calvin dropped to 7-4 in league action.
Calvin jumped out by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and added four more in the top half of the second off of Alma So. P Cory Brohl (Richmond, MI/Richmond) for a 6-0 advantage. The Knights’ offensive surge was highlighted by a two-run homer by Jr. SS Matt Schepel. Brohl, who gave up four earned runs, was replaced on the mound with two outs in the second by Sr. P Tony Garcia (Lapeer, MI/West), who recorded the final out.
The Scots scored single runs in each of the next two innings as So. LF Nick Townsend (St. Clair Shores, MI/DeLaSalle) walked to lead off the second and advanced to third on a single by Jr. CF Bobby Chasney (Warren, MI/Cousino). Townsend scored a run when Sr. SS Dan Gonzalez-Morales (Lansing, MI/Eastern) hit into a double-play.
In the bottom half of the third inning, Sr. RF Bobby Jock walked and Sr. 2B Adam Carrick (Essexville, MI/Garber) was hit by a pitch to start the frame. After a fielder’s choice by Sr. 3B Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids, MI/Fulton-Middleton), So. DH Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak, MI/Royal Oak) hit a sacrifice fly to knock in Jock and closing the gap to 6-2.
Alma tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on three hits and were helped by two Calvin errors. Gonzalez-Morales, Jock, Stephens and Fr. 2B Mike Bleise (Beal City, MI/Beal City), in for the injured Carrick), all crossed the plate for the Scots. Bleise, Stephens and Yourchock all singled in the inning as well.
The Scots completed the scoring in the fifth inning when they tallied five runs on three hits and were again helped by two Calvin miscues. The runs were scored by Townsend, Chasney, pinch-runner Jr. Tyler Periard (Birch Run, MI/Birch Run), Gonzalez-Morales and Jock. The hits in the inning, all singles, came from Townsend, Gonzalez-Morales and Bleise.
Garcia was the winning pitcher, evening his 2009 record to 1-1, for the Scots as he was superb in his five and a third innings. He gave up just three hits, never more than one in an inning and six strikeouts to no base on balls.
